Have you ever wondered what the different colors in the church mean? Here’s a summary put together by church member Pat Meek.
The church year begins with the ADVENT OF OUR LORD, four weeks getting ready for the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the arrival of the Son of God to live as a person among people. The color of Advent is PURPLE.
CHRISTMAS is a short season (December 25th to January 6th) of thankfulness for the goodness of God and a celebration of the light of the world. The color of Christmas is WHITE.
EPIPHANY begins on January 6th and represents the day the Wise Men came to see baby Jesus. Epiphany is followed by a season of ORDINARY TIME, which is the color GREEN.
LENT begins with Ash Wednesday, a season of self-examination and quiet contemplation. Christians prepare for the death of Jesus on the cross on GOOD FRIDAY following his footsteps through HOLY WEEK. The color of Lent is PURPLE.
GOOD FRIDAY is the part of the Lenten season when Christians are without Christ. The color is BLACK.
The season of EASTER begins with Easter Sunday, a glorious celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. It is a season of praise. The color of Easter is WHITE.
The season of PENTECOST begins fifty days after Easter. Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is a season of Evangelism and outreach, as Christians look for the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world around them. The color of Pentecost is RED.
PENTECOST is followed by a long season of ORDINARY TIME, a time of when we grow, nurture, and reflect on living our lives as Followers of Christ. The color is GREEN.
